Set in the hills away from the bustle of Atami, this private hot spring retreat is surrounded by bamboo and the sound of a nearby stream, welcoming one group at a time.
The sequence from the entrance to the open-air bath embraces the view of bamboo reaching skyward. A tall, narrow opening and a ceiling that rises toward the exterior draw the gaze upward, creating a sense of openness and connection with nature. Upon arrival, this encounter with the landscape invites a shift from everyday life to a slower pace.
By contrast, in the space extending from the living room to the terrace, a horizontal window and low ceiling and eaves frame the breadth of the bamboo grove. Settling into the sunken seating area brings the landscape into view at a relaxed eye level, creating a comforting sense of shelter and calm.
Guests can soak in the warm water, linger beside the bamboo, recline on tatami, and surrender to the breeze and the gentle sound of the stream.
A predominantly monochromatic palette unifies the exterior and interior, while exposed beams and concrete floors express the inherent textures of the structure and materials. Ornament is kept to a minimum, allowing the green of the bamboo and the shifting light to stand out.
Through the careful framing of views and economical use of materials, the design cultivates a close relationship between the body and nature. The aim was to create a retreat where guests can rest, remain aware of the natural world around them, and gradually reclaim time for themselves.
